The Cecil Higgins Gallery holds a major archive of the work of Edward Bawden comprising works from all periods of his career from 1922 until his death in 1989. This was made possible by Edward Bawden’s generous gift to the gallery of the contents of his studio in 1986.

Since it opened in 1923 the Towner Art Gallery was located in an 18th century manor house in Manor Gardens, in the Old Town district of Eastbourne. The original gallery is now closed to the public. It is now in the process of being relocated to a new, £8.5m purpose-built facility designed by Rick Mather Architects. This new state-of-the-art gallery is adjacent to the Congress Theatre, Devonshire Park and is scheduled to open late 2008. There is good holding of work by Eric Ravilious.

Combine a visit to the Fry Art Gallery with Audley End House. King Henry VIII gave Walden Abbey to Sir Thomas Audley, who transformed it into his mansion, Audley End, now in the care of English Heritage.

AIM – the organisation for independent museums – was founded to encourage new standards in the provision of service to users. AIM represents the strengths and needs in national policy making and provides a thriving network of information and help for members. Independent Museums range from small local organisations, mainly operated by volunteers, to large or national organisations – representing over half of all museums in the UK.

The Art Fund believes that everyone should have the opportunity to experience great art at first hand, and has been campaigning energetically on behalf of museums and galleries from its earliest years. As an independent, membership-based charity which receives no funding from government, The Art Fund is uniquely well placed to help shape arts policy and speak out on behalf of museums and their visitors. The Fry Gallery gratefully acknowledeges the assistance of the Art Fund in acquiring important works which would have been far beyond
our means.
