Artists at the Fry
describes the background to works in the Fry Art Gallery, Saffron Walden,
Essex. The gallery's unique North West Essex Collection is largely based on
the artists of Great Bardfield, including Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious,
Michael Rothenstein, John Aldridge and Kenneth Rowntree, who lived in this
Essex village between 1930 and 1970. The book sets in context the
spontaneous gathering of an interesting-group of artists, and assesses their
distinctive contributions. The Collection also spreads its net to include
other artists such as Michael Ayrton, Robert Colquhoun, Robert McBryde, and
Isabel Lambert, who lived in nearby villages. With original essays by Olive
Cook and Malcolm Yorke, plus biographical notes on the thirty artists who
comprise the Collection, Artists at the Fry is also a valuable
reference book for those interested in 20th-century British art, book
illustration and design.
